JIMMY DUGAZON

Jimmy Dugazon is a Haitian born artist with a degree in high-end fashion from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. “I’ve always been influenced by art and colors, it is how I express myself. I left the fashion industry to pursuit other opportunities and during the pandemic when we couldn’t go anywhere, I picked up a brush and started painting to escape.
Dugazon Art is my brand which is inspired a lot by Miami street art and culture where I am from. My work is infused with a lot of bright colors and big strokes to evoke emotions and to tell stories of what’s happening around me or my perception of life in motion.

My hope is to continue inspiring others with my work in a new spectrum of self-expression inspired by daily life as I see it.”

Let’s start with your story, we would like to know how your journey has been so far and hear how you got started.

I started painting during the pandemic when we couldn’t go anywhere, I picked up a brush and started painting to escape. I’ve always support other artist but just decided one day to test my skills…I’ve never looked back.

What does your art future hold for you?
When it comes to my work which is inspired and driven by the creating process, I don’t like to be too far ahead. I prefer to be present with the process because one cannot predict or force the creating process. However, I will say my hope is that my work is known or become known worldwide just like the great artist before me, hopefully that happens when I am alive instead of being dead, unlike those before me.

Artists are aways bombarded by how great it is to pursue their passion etc., but we know from a lot of people that it is not always that easy. Overall, would you say things have gotten better for you as an artist in South Florida?
I studied fashion and have worked in the fashion industry all here in South Florida for over 15 years. Yes! Things have evolved here in the area, but I wouldn’t say they’ve been for the better. Beside NEW YORK, MIAMI and South Florida area is supposed to be the Mecca for art in North America market, but success seems to only follow if you’re an established artist or if you’re represented by well-known Galleries worldwide. If you’re a nobody looking for success It seems impossible.

As you know I am impressed with your work, tell our readers more for example. What are you most proud of, and what sets you apart from others? Well first I want to say that art is subjective. Always have been and always will be. And theres some amazing art out there.

However, I’m proud of the work I produce because it has a message or telling a story that I can relate to. I create from raw emotions and from being present in the moment. I try to bring life into my work. When the viewer can look at my work and know instantly that’s a Dugazon artwork or when a piece can speak for itself, those are the things that sets me apart from others.

How do you keep motivated:
I don’t put pressure on myself to stay in a creating mode. I find it’s easier to let the process flow. So, when I feel I have something to say or when I am pulled towards the canvas and paint, that’s when I paint. My best work is produced from that approach.

Name a famous artist that inspires you and one not yet famous artist you would like the readers to know about.
Jean-Michel Basquiat is my favorite artist. Favorite artist who’s not yet famous would be myself. I don’t pay attention to other artist. I don’t want to be influence by anyone else on the work that I produce. It’s imperative to stay true to myself in my work. If I have to pick someone else who alive it would be Yayoi Kusama. She’s in a world of her own.

Is there a current or upcoming show or exhibit you want to let people know about?
My current is currently being exhibited art FORT LAUDERDALE AIRPORT TERMINALS 3 and 4

What inspires you to be an artist and what inspiration can you pass on to others?
I’m inspired every day by people, things, places and life itself. What I’m more inspired by is when I witness someone looking at my work and they’re having a moment over something that I created. Thats inspiring!

The only inspiration I have for others is to do what you love. I follow that motto for everything in life.

How are you giving back to your community? I volunteer my time whenever possible with The National LGBTQ Task Force, SAVE Organization and others.

Is there anyone in particular you would like to mention, mentors, etc.?
Yes! I would like to mention here my 5th grade teacher Mrs. Marty. She was a huge mentor to me and an amazing teacher who taught me the English Language. She also gave me the tools to navigate this foreign land as an immigrant to this country when I was young. Without her constant support, education and belief in me, I don’t believe I would be where I am today.

Let’s end with a fun fact about you.
One fun fact about me is, THE BODYGUARD by Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston continues to be my favorite movie. I believe Whitney to be my gay DIVA. Every gay men have one. Also the ending of the movie where they played the song I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU, that ending is synonymous with my life story at the time.

Anything else you would like to include?
For the reader or viewer to be open to others that they might not agree with or view as their own likeness. You just might learn something.
