Brenden Sanborn

Brenden Sanborn, an artist hailing from South Florida, has dedicated over two decades of his life to the exploration and celebration of the human figure. Not confined to a single medium, Brenden has cultivated a versatile portfolio that encompasses watercolors, oils, acrylics, and even digital art created with Procreate. This variety of mediums is a testament to Brenden’s adaptability and adventurous spirit as an artist. For him, painting is more than merely arranging lines and shapes on a canvas; it’s a spiritual journey that delves deep into the human condition, expressing realms of sensitivity, passion, tenderness, and vulnerability that often go unseen. The human form, to him, is a vessel of strength, humility, and sensuality, and he expertly captures these traits through his art.

Inviting his audience on an enlightening journey, Brenden captures the subtle emotional undertones of each subject through their body language. The slight tilt of the head, the commanding angle of the shoulders, or the assertive posture of the chest all contribute to the narrative. Each work of art tells a unique tale, brought to life through expressive color, thoughtful pen pressure, and the depth and width of lines. His creative process is an intuitive dance of elements, with his use of color being instinctive and reflective of both his own emotional state and the emotions he perceives in his subjects. His art is an ongoing evolution, a spiritual journey to uncover the soulful individual behind the captivating physique. Through his work, Brenden offers gateways into a deeper understanding of humanity, a testament to the power of art and its role in our shared human experience.

My Journey So Far

My journey as an artist began over two decades ago in New England, where I was featured in several galleries, including those in Provincetown, while living in Maine. In 2015, I moved to South Florida and continued to develop my artistic vision. Watercolor quickly became my primary medium, allowing me to articulate the nuances of human nature and emotion. Over the years, I’ve also embraced oils, acrylics, and digital art, constantly evolving and refining my approach to capturing the essence of love, strength, and vulnerability..

What Does Your Art Future Hold for You?

The future of my art is focused on continued exploration and expansion. I aim to delve deeper into the themes of inclusivity and human connection, pushing the boundaries of how these concepts can be expressed through various mediums. I plan to create more interactive and immersive art experiences, both online and in physical spaces, to engage a broader audience and foster a deeper appreciation for the transformative power of art.

Has Being an Artist in South Florida Gotten Easier?

Pursuing a passion for art is undoubtedly challenging, but I would say that things have improved for me as an artist in South Florida. The vibrant art community in Miami and now Wilton Manors, coupled with the support of my website, www.brendensanborn.com, has allowed me to reach a wider audience. Additionally, the increasing acceptance and appreciation for diverse artistic expressions have created more opportunities for collaboration and growth. I am also very thankful for the growth of my Etsy shop during the COVID outbreak, where I achieved over 11,000 sales. While the journey is never without its hurdles, the overall environment for artists in South Florida has become more encouraging and supportive.

What Sets You Apart and What Are You Most Proud Of?

What sets me apart as an artist is my commitment to capturing the subtle emotional undertones of the human figure through expressive color and thoughtful details. My work is not just about creating visually appealing pieces but about telling the unique stories of my subjects, reflecting their inner worlds and emotions. I am most proud of my ability to connect with people through my art, inspiring them to see the beauty and strength in vulnerability. This connection is what drives me and what I consider my greatest achievement as an artist.

How Do You Keep Motivated?

I stay motivated by continually exploring new themes and techniques in my art. The passion for expressing human emotion and connecting with people through my work drives me. Additionally, teaching my skills to the world on YouTube provides a platform for connection and a worldwide reach, allowing me to share my passion and knowledge with a diverse audience.

Name a Famous Artist and an Emerging Artist Who Inspire You? Picasso is my favorite artist. His fearlessness and innovative approach to art, which continues to influence contemporary artists, is something I hope to achieve in my lifetime. An emerging artist I admire is [Name of Emerging Artist], whose work beautifully captures the essence of modern human experiences and emotions, much like my own focus on the human figure.

Is There a Current or Upcoming Show or Exhibit You Want to Let People Know About?I have a few international shows coming up in September 2024 in Luxembourg and Paris. These exhibitions are exciting opportunities to showcase my work to a broader audience. I also love working with the Broward Art Guild and now Wilton Art Works, as their shows highlight a great range of talents and provide a wonderful platform for local artists.

What Inspires You to Be an Artist and What Inspiration Can You Pass on to others?

The human experience and the depth of emotions inspire me to be an artist. I find beauty in vulnerability and strength in expressing one’s true self through art. To others, I would say, never be afraid to explore your emotions and let them guide your creative process. Authenticity and passion are the keys to creating meaningful art.

How Are You Giving Back to Your Community?

Giving back is something I’ve always done. I’ve worked with several charities and organizations that support the LGBTQ+ community. I feature local artists on my blog to help them gain exposure and share my skills with the arts community on how to leverage their work for different revenue streams. I believe in the abundance of opportunities for everyone and that artists need to support one another. My goal is to help others see the possibilities of being a full-time artist through innovation and adaptability.

Is There Anyone in Particular You Would Like to Mention, Mentors, etc.?

My biggest mentor when I was younger was my mom. She always supplied me with paper, crayons, and encouragement and told me that I could do this thing that I love more than anything as a “job” when I got older. I knew at a very young age that there was nothing else I wanted to do.  There have been several other mentors throughout my journey, too many to name, but all have given me unique insights and helped me grow as an artist. One thing I have always believed in is that arts communities need to drop the competition and apply more of an uplifting setting.

Fun Fact About You

A fun fact about me is that I was a kid of the 80s and collected Garbage Pail Kids trading cards. I still have my original collection. Until the age of 12, I thought I would become an artist for the trading card company. Later, I aspired to work for Disney and even got several interviews to become a background scene painter for their featured films.
